At Ichinose, go straight ahead over the bridge and through the bike guard to, on your left, the hut (rebuilt many times) where Basho the haiku poet lived. Basho died in 1694. Entry to the hut and garden is free, thanks to Kodansha the publisher. When the cherry blooms, cups of warm amazake (sweet sake), which has hints of maple syrup, are dished out in paper cups. Benches against the hut look out on the garden, which is rough, not manicured. Then back out and to the left along Kanda River. Perhaps it's time to go home. Continue on with the Kandagawa on your right. After maybe a kilometer, you'll run into the Edogawa Station of the Yurakucho Line. To get back to Shibuya, catch the train on Platform 1 to Nagatacho, where change to the Hanzomon Line. Jaa ne. Why not put up one of your favorite Tokyo walks here, in English or Japanese?
