Grab your Bullseye and prepare to reenlist for a third tour against waves of Chimera that seem unending & unforgiving in this title. You'll be taking over a completely different character in this third installment but your goal remains the same, kill anything with more than 2 eyes. This game is fast paced and non stop with little to no break in between the action. I like to think that Resistance stands on its own and is selfishly independent but so many things about this scream repetitive first person shooter. With a good campaign and moderately deep multiplayer this trilogies latest entry pails in comparison with the competition. While the graphics are very clean and visually acceptable the game just feels like it has you going through the motions just to get to the end. Normally PlayStation exclusive titles like Killzone and LBP are stellar titles but somewhere in the fray it seems Resistance was left behind. One thing I found completely unacceptable was the glitches within the game. There should be none!
The main bulk of this game is it's enveloping story; the struggle of mankind versus the despicable Chimera. It has one of the most original stories of any FPS in recent history. But fails to duplicate that in any other aspect. The campaign plays through like any other with the usual cutscenes after intense battles then slowly building back to intense battles with cutscenes to follow....etc. The gameplay mechanics stay the same minus the addition of some new-old features. Such as the weapon wheel which make selecting how you'd like to kill your enemy a bit easier. As for advancements the leveling up of your weapons is good but is hardly noticeable as to what it does exactly, and again the lack of "originality" is rampant across every aspect in this game.
The graphics are fairly tight and clean, giving the gritty feel and look of an apocalyptic pre-1960 era United States. Although with all the "human" based technology I often forgot it's based in a period 50+ years removed from today. The one impressive but very minor effect I found amazing was the brilliant realism of the water and its interaction with your character. Indeed it was beautiful and so majestic I just wallowed in the sewer of a decrepit prison all while being chased by freakish Chimera. The models and Chimera models have come a long way since Fall of Man and are beautifully rendered but lack the personal touch of originality that Insomniac brought in its Ratchet & Clank titles.
As mentioned before the originality was not there for this title. It seemed to be too many games but lacked its own original personality. I also encountered many glitches while playing, most of which were manageable but some completely unacceptable. In particular the parts where my character would get stuck for no reason as I was assaulted by waves of Chimera got to be pretty frustrating. As did inopportune loading freezes that left my screen blank as well as my expression. The lesser glitches were ok, I can deal with an enemy vanishing into a wall only to come out with a vengeance.
This game and entire series had so much potential to stand out and be its "own" but came up short and only managed to breed mediocrity in my eyes. Unless you are a truly diehard Resistance fan or only own a PS3 you can skip this and not miss anything truly worth playing. But for hardcore Chimera killers and PS3 owners this title might be worth a rent, but not full price. This time I will be generous and give Resistance 3, 3 mediocre stars outta 5.....Waah waaaah.
