On theatre day the surgical intern will be called  early in the morning to admit patients (from 7.30 onwards) and then  again to discharge them later in the day. This unit is covered by the anaesthetic teams who round regularly. Doctors are expected to leave their white coat off at the door and don an apron. Usually if the team has a patient in ICU then any medical issues will be covered by the more senior members of the team. Of note this unit is a  good place to find appropriate blood ordering forms for when the PIPE  system is  down, the forms are all on the wall on the left hand side on entering  the unit. Just remember to respect infection control.  The ICU is also where you can find an ABG machine.

Laboratories:
Ph: 01 809 2668 biochemistry
01 809 2705 blood bank
01 809 2703 haematology
01 809 2656 coagulation.

When looking for laboratory numbers look at the list on the chute terminal; the numbers of destinations usually correspond to their phone number.

The various laboratories in the hospital are located at the end of a long corridor with A&E at the opposite end. A swipe card is needed to get in. Accessing this area is usually necessary when the chute system is under maintenance and the intern needs to take the blood samples down personally. Note: if you are working under the transplant service it is good practice to bring ALL bloods to the lab by hand as these are so important post-transplant.

Occasionally an intern may go down to pick up blood or discuss a test depending on the situation. It is good practice to make sure that ABGs always go off in the chute system as these will give false results if they do not make it to the laboratory immediately.

Medical Admin: Lower Ground Floor:
Ph:
01 809 2189
Medical nAdmin is located just before the doctor’s res on the lower ground floor. Available here is the call schedule, facilities for changing the call schedule, checking what dates need to be included on the timesheet, and innumerable other administrative duties. Time sheets are available on the wall outside the door. Medical Admin will contact interns about intern tutorials, contract issues, call issues and will help interns whenever possible with whatever difficulties interns are having with rotas or job issues. Timesheets are handed in, completed and signed by the NCHD and your Consultant, to this department by the date specified  by a poster in admin and the res. Note: the date can vary somewhat from month to month.

The doctor’s on-call residence is located underneath the vascular testing labs and the main door is just past Medical Administration. NCHD’s need their I.D.s to gain access. There are bedrooms on either side of the res with bathrooms, lockers and the main res area in the middle. Lockers are available at the start of the year. The main res area has facilities for tea, coffee, a fridge, a microwave and two vending machines. There is also a TV. Mail directed to interns via the hospital will be kept in cubbyholes in the main res room and payslips will be delivered here on the last day of each month (or if the last day falls on a weekend, on the Friday). The IMO notice board is located here.  Each bedroom has a notice saying which doctor on call it is intended for. The res rooms are cleaned each day between 9 and 12, and there are lockers in the room.  t’s a good idea to bring a lock as some items have disappeared from Res rooms in previous years. The res room is a place to rest on call, order in food and meet senior doctors to whom one can pose questions. The  ‘res’ is open 24/7, all year.
